Peking University, Beijing, May 5, 2009: On May 3rd, in order to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the May Fourth Movement and also May Fourth Youth Day, over a hundred youths from the media from nearly 50 universities in Beijing gathered in Peking University to attend the forum of the media affiliated with the University Communist Youth League in Beijing. The forum was under the guidance of Beijing Municipal Committee of China Communist Youth League, organized by Peking University Committee of China Communist Youth League, and undertaken by PKU Youth, the University’s official newspaper.
The opening ceremony of the forum was held in Yingjie Exchange Center on morning of the festivities. The welcome speech was delivered by Mr. Han Liu, Secretary of the Peking University Committee of China Communist Youth League and Director of PKU Youth. According to Mr. Han, the theme of the forum, “New May Fourth, New Youth, and New Spirit,” embodied a three-layer meaning. “New May Fourth” is to remind us of looking at the social and national changes in a historical and developmental way; “New Youth” on the other hand, is to inspire us to consider what kind of young people could be called new; and “New Spirit” is to adapt to the social changes, inherit the tradition and advance with the times.
Deputy Chief Editor of China Youth Daily, Mr. Liu Jian, listed two requirements for the staff of the media. One was to have a lofty character, to take it easy but also determined with the profession; the other was to have strong capacity, including rich experience, much reading and a correct way of understanding, and to be open-minded and non-biased.
Deputy Chief Editor of Beijing Youth Daily, Mr. Fu Xincai, stressed that the media should take the initiative to face the challenges and opportunities against the mass-participated communication in his speech given at the forum.
Following the opening ceremony, the student representatives were divided into groups to exchange views on 6 topics, that included the responsibilities, construction and management, brand building and running of the media affiliated with the University Committee of Communist Youth League, etc.
At the closing ceremony in the afternoon, the conveners of the sessions from Peking University, Tsinghua University, Renmin University of China, Beijing Normal University, Communication University of China, and China University of Political Science and Law each reported the results of their respective group discussions one by one. Representative from Tsinghua University Zhagn Junchuan delivered the summary speech on the thorough and extensive discussions of the forum. It was agreed that the media affiliated with the University Committee of Communist Youth League should shoulder the new mission of the times, take the initiative to face the new challenges, guide the ideological trend of the youth and develop in a scientific way.
