The University of San Diego (USD) School of Law announced a further collaboration between Peking University School of Transnational Law (STL), located in Shenzhen, China in the areas of U.S. and international tax law. Effective January 1, 2013, the two schools will work together to develop STL’s tax curriculum with assistance from USD faculty who will teach courses in Shenzhen on an annual basis. This partnership will supplement the student exchange program between USD School of Law and STL established during the fall 2012 semester.
"With this new collaboration, STL and USD School of Law take the lead in developing a law school tax exchange program between China and the U.S.,” said Director of USD School of Law’s Tax Programs and Professor-in-Residence John Forry.
"We are excited to be expanding our relationship with STL, which is one of the best and most innovative law schools in China,” said USD School of Law Professor and Director of International and Comparative Law Programs Michael Ramsey. “This new program will further a partnership that promises to bring great benefits to students and faculty of both institutions."
Members of USD School of Law’s highly ranked tax faculty will spend a portion of the late spring and summer sessions in China as visiting international faculty of STL, where they will interact with STL’s highly regarded faculty and students, and enhance STL’s curriculum by offering courses from USD’s well-established tax curriculum. STL students who later enroll in one of USD’s graduate programs could then petition for these courses to be applied towards their LLM degree.
"Recognizing that preparing law graduates for the dynamic global legal environment does not stop at the water's edge, STL and USD School of Law take a bold and innovative step in creating a truly integrated joint program linking our China and United States law schools,” says Acting Dean Stephen Yandle of STL.
The first USD School of Law faculty will be visiting STL late in the spring 2013 semester. Pursuant to the student exchange program, the first three STL exchange students will be attending USD the same semester. It is expected that the first group of USD School of Law JD students will attend STL in 2013-14, focusing their studies on common law courses with a transnational and comparative law emphasis.
For nearly 40 years, USD School of Law has been a leader in international and comparative law. The law school offers a JD degree with an international law concentration, an LLM degree in international law for U.S. students and an LLM degree in comparative law for graduates of law schools outside the United States. Since 2004, USD has had an exchange program with the University of Copenhagen (Denmark), which provides for reciprocal visits of both students and faculty. USD School of Law has recently established similar exchange programs with Universidad Torcuato Di Tella (Argentina), Hebrew University of Jerusalem (Israel) and EBS Law School (Germany), in addition to STL.
