Peking University, Beijing, Apr. 30, 2009: On April 28, the press conference of the first anniversary for the countdown of the Shanghai World Exposition was held in Beijing. The World Expo Star ceremony & the 2010 Expo College Students’ Creative Contest for Environmental Protection were started at the same time. Five Chinese college students, including Luo Ri, a graduate of College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, Peking University (PKU), have been awarded the title of “Image Ambassador of 2010 Expo Star” as the representatives of the Antarctic Expedition Team of Chinese College Students.
From March to April, six students for PKU went to the Antarctic for scientific expedition together with senior managers from multinational companies and other students from world-level universities. During this period, they witnessed the changes of the ecological environment in Antarctic, and made further discussions with others on the topic of climate changes and energy resources. Together with other members of this team, the PKU students have delivered speeches in colleges and companies around China to share their experience and gains on the journey and promoted environmental protection as well after their expedition. In order to award their contributions to environmental protection, the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo awarded them the title of “Image Ambassador of 2010 Expo Star.”
After the ceremony, the World Expo Star Selection & the 2010 Expo College Students’ Creative Contest for Environmental Protection, supported by Coca-Cola Company, would be started immediately around the colleges in China. The theme of the contest is “Little change to create new wonder in the city”, which is to expand the Expo 2010 Shanghai China’s theme: “Better city, better life.” They want to encourage the college students to release their passion, and create a better future for the cities’ harmonious development by their creativity.
According to the organizers, there will be 200 students selected as the “World Expo Star” to spread the theme of Expo 2010 Shanghai China in the end of May. They will also be invited to visit the exposition districts during the period of the Expo 2010. In the meantime, their works will have the opportunities to be exhibited in the Coca-Cola Company’s hall.
Chen Chao, the Vice-Minister of Market Department of the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo, expressed that the success of the Expo 2010 Shanghai China needs support from the whole society and the participation of every one. He hoped that there could be more and more young people taking part in the Expo to show Chinese youths’ creativities on the environmental protection to the whole world through this contest.
