On April 1st, “Exxon Mobile’s Prospect for Global Energy Future and Scholarship Granting Ceremony” was held in the Centennial Memorial Auditorium at Peking University. Vice President of Exxon Mobile Alan Kelly, Vice President of Peking University Lin Jianhua and other leaders from Exxon Mobile and PKU participated the ceremony as honored guests. More than one hundred students and teachers from the School of Engineering joined the ceremony. The ceremony was hosted by Associate Dean in the School of Engineering, Tang Shaoqiang. Vice President of Peking University, Lin Jianhua addressed the meeting first. He pointed out that as China’s oldest comprehensive university, Peking University has first-class research potency in fundamental sciences. Taking this advantage, it has reorganized School of Engineering to promote the application of research in fundamental sciences. He said one of the major strategies PKU has is to combine research and industry and to transform knowledge to productivity. He hoped that the cooperation between Exxon Mobile and PKU could be strengthened for both sides to work together in order to promote international communications and continued global development. Associate Dean of the School of Engineering, Tang Shaoqiang reflected first upon the cooperation between Exxon Mobile and Peking University in creating internship opportunities and funding research activities. He expressed gratitude for the generous support Exxon Mobile offered. He also introduced the recent progress of the school in research and education. Then PKU Vice President Lin Jianhua and Exxon Mobile’s Vice President Alen Kelly gave grants to the honored professors and students. Gu Xuenan, a student in the School of Engineering expressed her sincere gratitude for Exxon Mobile’s generous support for her and the school. She introduced her current study and research status and shared her future plans with the audience. After the ceremony, Vice President of Exxon Mobile Alen Kelly delivered a speech on “The Outlook for Energy: a view to 2030”. He predicted the global energy demand in the coming 20 years and suggested responses to the shortage of energy and the increasing emissions. He especially introduced Exxon Mobile’s efforts in R&D, logistics and international cooperation for conserving energy and emission reducing.
