Peking University, Beijing, Dec. 23, 2009: On the evening of December 19, the first roundo f the 2009-2010 Peking University (PKU) “Galaxy of Time” Drama Star ended at the Centennial Hall, which brought a successful end to Drama Week.
Just as what Sun Xiaoru, a judge of the contest, has said: “We need courage to challenge the classics, but wisdom to deconstruct the classics.” In the School of Journalism and Communications’ (SJC) production, “There is Thunder, but No Storm” is a rewritten drama based on the classic drama “Thunderstorm”. A senior in the SJC, who is obsessed with filming and directing, wanted to set up a cast of “Thunderstorm” in his last year of the college. However, they were faced with difficulties ever since the beginning.
After an entire semester’s work, the production was finally unable to be performed, but this “Thunderstorm” dream was deeply etched in these young hearts. By showing the characters’ differences in and out of the drama, “There is Thunder, but No Storm” delivered a theme that there will be storm after the thunder if we have dreams.
Facing difficulties, people may choose some extreme methods if their minds become extreme and fragile, such as suicide by jumping off a building. The “Lost and Life” production from the School of Software and Microelectronics showed us the last four hours of a girl that committed suicide, Xiao Xi. The production, with its clever directing and script, impressed the audiences deeply.
Then, the Law School’s production titled “Dream in a Dream” caused to atmosphere to suddenly stiffen. The story started with a fictional contest — “College Students’ World Cup”. When the protagonist woke up, he found that it was just a dream. They have interlaced the dream with historical events, such as the Nanjing Massacre, China’s entering of WTO, and China's National Day parade, which were showed in the form of metaphor. Not until the end of the play did the audiences understand the drama’s historical connotation and its ingenious design.
The final drama was “There are LV Bags Everywhere”, which told a simple love story between Zhang Xiaoxiao, a frustrated boy, and Baobao, a florist. Although the story is simple, the brilliant singing and dancing, the actors’ meaningful lines, and various fashionable entertainments have made the whole play unforgettable. The perfect performance of the main actress and the stunning appearance of Xiao Qi, a homosexual sound effects designer, also attracted people’s attention.
In the end, the play “There are LV Bags everywhere” won first place of this preliminary contest, and also won the awards of Best Actor and the Best Actress. “Lost and Life” placed second in the contest. The seven-day Drama Week successfully closed curtain and left deep impressions for audience members. We all look forward to the students’ exciting performances in the semi-finals.
