Peking University. Beijing. April 2, 2010: To mark the centennial anniversary of chemical education and research at PKU, Advanced Materials, one of the top journals in material sciences, published a special issue. The issue gave an overview of the materials science work being carried out at PKU’s College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering(CCME). Thirteen papers were specially selected to give an in-depth look at research in three broad fields: controlled preparation and characterization techniques, organic and hybrid materials and inorganic materials. Another top journal Coordination Chemistry Reviews have celebrated the event earlier this month.
CCME was formerly the Huaxuemen(Branch of Chemistry) in Gezhike (School of Sciences) built up by the Royalty of Qing Dynasty in 1910. The Branch of Chemistry welcomed its first seven students on April 30th in 1910. Graduate education was started in 1917 and a group of fourteen students were admitted. In 1919, the Branch of Chemistry was renamed as Department of Chemistry. In 1952, chemistry departments in Tsinghua University and Yenching University were merged into PKU and a new Department of Chemistry at PKU was formed. To emphasize the core role of molecule in chemical research, the department changed its name to College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering. In 2001, the faculty of Applied Chemistry from the School of Physical Sciences joined the chemistry research family.
