Peking University, Apr. 22, 2010: In order to express condolences to victims of Yushu Earthquake, a mourning ceremony was held at Shenzhen Graduate School (SGS) of Peking University on April 21.
The ceremony started at 7:49, the time when Yushu Earthquake took place, with the national flag in the square lowered to half-mast and the national anthem played. Teachers and students gathering on this PKU campus in South China stood in silent tribute for three minutes to express condolences to the victims of last week’s devastating earthquake. Then, following Prof. Hai Wen, Vice President of PKU and Dean of SGS, attendants dedicated flowers to the victims, which showed their deep mourning.
After the ceremony, a general meeting of teachers and students was held, attended by all members of the Communist Party of China (CPC) at Shenzhen Graduate School. At the meeting, Prof. Hai Wen delivered a speech, emphasizing that Party members should keep in vanguard of the missions of the time and be devoted to the development of the school and our society, particularly during a national emergency. He called on all the teachers and students, especially Party members, to bear the responsibility and take actions in supporting the reconstruction of earthquake-hit areas.
An activity aiming at raising money for the victims also began at Shenzhen Graduate School on April 21.
Prof. Shi Shouxu, Assistant President of Peking University and Executive Vice Dean of Shenzhen Graduate School, and Prof. Zhang Yonghong, Vice Dean of Shenzhen Graduate School, joined the teachers and students in the mourning activities. The ceremony was presided over by Prof. Luan Shengji, Vice Dean of SGS.
A 7.1-magnitude quake struck Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu in southern Qinghai on April 14. It has left at least 2,187 people dead, 80 missing, and 12,135 injured by Thursday.
