Peking University, Oct. 29, 2013: The second International Advanced Forum on Communication Studies of Language and Rhetoric was recently held in Qufu, Shandong Province, hometown of Confucius, during October 18th-20th. Nearly 100 scholars both from home and abroad attended the forum, including professors from China, the United States, France, Germany, Mexico, Italy, Japan, South Korea, South Africa, Argentina, etc. PKU Professor Chen Rudong and Professor Guan Shijie were also invited, bringing influential academic statements on international communication strategy of Chinese Culture.
The forum kicked off
The forum commenced with the greeting speech “Develop rhetorical communication studies to promote international culture communication” by Professor Chen Rudong. Chen pointed out that China had a long-time tradition of rhetorical communication studies and gained much reputation. Rhetorical communication was a vital part of current international communication. He also illustrated strategic and realistic significance of rhetorical communication studies.

In the following speech “China’s strategic transformation of national media paradigm”, Professor Chen expressed his intention to build a national media system of which major function was public information service, in order to publicize production and consumption of information. He also declared that cultivating sophisticated media market, changing party publicity to national publicity and further to national rhetoric, would be a new trend of the transformation of national media paradigm of China.
Professor Guan Shijie made a report on “The international culture diversity and the translation of characteristic values of China——for the instance of‘Shu’in Chinese-English dictionary.” He insisted that transliteration and notes should be jointly used when translating core words of Chinese culture, which was really important to the promotion of both the deep-going global culture communication and magnificent Chinese culture.

Group discussion and two casual round-table forums on trends of international rhetorical communication studies and global rhetoric studies were also held. Scholars from all over the world made arguments on rhetorical communication and traditions, as well as cultural shock and cultivation of rhetorical ability in global communication and rhetoric.
Professor Camargo said that he would like to know more about tradition and form of Chinese rhetoric on his visit to Qufu, hometown of Confucius. Professor Chen Rudong clarified that scholars should have great foresight and breath of mind, stick to the aim of “Academy Culture Friendship”and jointly promote the development of international rhetorical communication studies and global rhetoric studies. This forum itself could represent globalization, for it was attended by scholars from various countries.
The second International Advanced Forum on Communication Studies of Language and Rhetoric was initiated by School of Journalism and Communication of Peking University (PKU). The first session of the forum was held at PKI. The second session was held by Global Association of Rhetoric and Qufu Normal University. During the forum, 6 PKU students had their papers published. The voice from PKU was paid close attention by scholars, and brought out strong resonance and heated discussion.
The forum got great attention from international academia. Academic organizations, such as International Rhetorical History Association, South African Rhetoric Association, Latin American Rhetoric Association, Argentine Rhetoric Association and Bulgarian Rhetoric Association all gave congratulations to the forum.
