Peking University, Jan. 3, 2015: The Peking University Award Ceremony for Volunteer Service 2014 was held at Yingjie Exchange Center on December 11. Professor Ye Jingyi, vice chairperson of Peking University Council, and Ruan Cao, director of Center of Extracurricular Activities, attended the ceremony.
PKU student volunteers have come to considerable fame for their work at Beijing Olympic Games in 2008, the celebratory parade for the 50th National Day in 2009 and Beijing International Garden Expo in 2013. This year, 323 PKU students volunteered their services for APEC 2014. Their volunteer service time added up to 9588 hours. At the award ceremony, 4 of the PKU APEC volunteers shared their experiences at the conferences.

The PKU Award Ceremony for Volunteer Service is a key activity in PKU Volunteer Culture Festival 2014. Song Wenxuan, one of the award winners and a member of the Volunteer Teaching Team of Postgraduates, just finished his services in Yushu, Qinghai Province this summer. In Song’s address at the ceremony, he talked about his memorable experiences in western China. “PKU volunteers should not feel content merely by being the evergreen grass which can survive the hard snow,” said the young man, “We should aspire to make substantial contributions to our motherland and become the solid pillars which hold up the roof of the nation.” He accentuated dedication and responsibility as the two main qualities of the PKU volunteers.
Professor Ye Jingyi delivered a congratulatory address to the award winners. She said that the campus volunteer service groups could pay more attention to team building and improve their work through more effective organization since more mature patterns for volunteer services could surely better encourage students to participate in them.
