Peking University, May. 9, 2012: The opening ceremony of the first undergraduate physicists' tournament of Peking University (PKU) organized by the School of Physics was held in Room 201, Natural Science Classroom Building on the morning of May 5.

PKU Vice President Wang Enge made the opening address. He shared his joyful memories of working in the School of Physics, which as he pointed out, has been making quite an effort to improve not only teaching and scientific researches but also extracurricular platforms for students. Such activities as the physicists’ tournament can facilitate education revolution and the development of the subject of physics. Wang Enge concluded the speech by wishing great success for all the participating teams.

Professor Xiong Jun from Beijing Normal University mentioned in his speech that PKU students deeply impressed him with their self-confidence and good academic abilities in the second China Undergraduate Physicists’ Tournament last year. He expected great performance from PKU in the upcoming national tournament this year held at Beijing Normal University.

PKU undergraduate physicists’ tournament followed the system of International Young Physicists’ Tournament (IYPT) and China Undergraduate Physicists’ Tournament (CUPT). It aims at fostering students’ interest in physics, improving their research ability and communication skills. The winning teams will compete in CUPT representing PKU. The tournament consists of five rounds, which will be held on May 5, 6 and 12, with 10 teams of 67 undergraduates. Top three teams in the ladder will advance to the final taking place on the afternoon of May 12.

About IYPT

The IYPT, sometimes also referred to as "Physics World Cup" is a team-oriented scientific competition among teams of secondary school students. The participants present their solutions to scientific problems they have prepared over several months and then discuss their solutions with other teams. The roles of Reporter (Presentation), Opponent and Reviewer are graded by a jury consisting of international experts.
