Peking University, Nov. 29, 2012: On November 21, 2012, the seminar “China in the Following 10 Years” was held by the National School of Development, in order to have a better understanding of the spirit of the conference of the 18th CPC National Congress and a further discussion on the opportunities and challenges China will face in the next 10 years.
With the success of the conference of the 18th CPC National Congress, China is facing with a completely new decade and will encounter all kinds of challenges in various fields, a trial for this nation is on the path of transformation from a middle-income country to a high-income one, especially under the goal of national income doubling.
The seminar was divided into 4 panels: Looking Backward & Forward, Crossing the Middle-Income Trap, Economic & Political Reform, and Positioning of China in the World.
Professor Yao Yang, Dean of National School of Development, addressed that the coming 10 years is crucial to China. Though economy serves as the basic, to contribute to national development, efforts from other disciplines than economics are indispensible. The National School of Development, an interdisciplinary research institute devoted to the increase in economy, gave it a good try by holding this seminar.
Professor Liu Wei, Vice President of PKU, analyzed the 2006 data of more than 200 countries and regions around the world, before he reached the conclusion that only through innovation can China get over the so called “Middle-Income Trap”.
Meanwhile, Professor Li Qiang, Assistant President of PKU, pointed out that China has taken economic as well as political reforms during the past 30 years, and the government has been focusing on economic construction since the opening-up. Although achievements have been made, we should watch out for the danger of redundant construction, if local governments keep carrying out their own economic plans inconsistent with the mainstream one and seeking for unrestricted local profits.
Former World Bank chief economist, Professor Justin Yifu Lin, said that the next 10 years are extremely important for China, U.S., as well as the whole world. We should all work together to solve our common problems.
The seminar was attended by professors, students, and alumni from various departments of PKU as well as other universities.
