Peking University, Apr. 23, 2015: Even though Li Na, idol of most Chinese tennis enthusiasts and champion of the French Open and the Australia Open tennis tournaments, has retired for over half a year and is expecting a baby, her popularity among Chinese fans of this worldwide sport has not waned. The 24th PKU Open held on April 18 is evidence of this. The event attracted more than 100 participants, consisting of college students, teachers and university staff with a common passion for this enchanting sport.

The event took place over two days from April 18 to April 19, with group matches on the first day and elimination matches on the second. Occasional wind and rain interrupted the match, but only for brief stretches. Participants were mainly from colleges in Beijing, though many were international students and teachers while several participants were college graduates who maintained their love for the sport. While day two saw increasingly fierce competition with every top-player vying for the top prize, players upheld the spirit of sportsmanship and grace that symbolizes tennis etiquette. The two-day event was a feast for both players and audience.

The PKU Open has had 24 consecutive sessions over 12 years since November, 2003 and has become one of the most prominent tennis tournaments in the Beijing region. Li Na’s international reputation as a world champion has encouraged more and more college students to grab racquets and start learning tennis, which also facilitates the growth of related sport gear and equipment industries. PKU Open under such circumstances has gradually gained popularity and many college students even see it as a “grand slam” event in Beijing.
