Married at twenty: love story on campus
Jun 10, 2015
Peking University, June 6, 2015: On April 30, 2015, Qin Chuan, a sophomore from Department of Chinese Language and Literature, gave herself a special gift for her 20-year-old birthday---the marriage certificate with Wang Wu.

She and her husband Wang now live in a small rented house with a courtyard, accompanied by their adopted kitten named “Cream”.

They first met in a gathering of their mutual friends. Wang Wu recalled that while waiting for their friends, he and Qin Chuan began to have some casual talk. At the end of the party, Qin somehow felt that Wang had a feeling for her.

Then they had their first phone call when Qin turned to Wang for help with her homework for computer lesson. Wang is very talented in computer science since he was very young. He quit the national college entrance examination and chose to work in a startup. Then in 2011, he was admitted by School of Electronics Engineering and Computer Science of PKU. With his expertise, Wang solved all the problems Qin had, and since then, their relationship progressed quite smooth.

Qin once held a very skeptical view of the world, but then in a chat, she was amazed to find that Wang had a profounder understanding of how the world works. “He made me believe in life again, and I started to fall in love with him”, says Qin.

They hugged each other on the day they were watching The Matrix. The progress of their relationship, in their eyes, is quite natural.

Though busy with their own studies and work, they support each other all the time. Wang joined the volunteer teaching team in which Qin is the leader, while Qin would work with Wang’s company, which made her “the pivot and the soul of the company” in Wang’s eye. Together they started new business, conducted social survey, volunteered for the teaching session and attended lessions. They stick together like glue and varnish. To spend more time together, they decided to rent a house after they had knew each other for two months.

They have many common hobbies. Both are fascinated with religious study, sociology and philosophy. They have frequent heated discussion and even quarrels for some of the unintelligible issues. They are also enthusiasts for travelling and have been to many places within the year they are together.

On April 29, Qin’s nineteenth’s birthday, they first talked about marriage. “All is so natural for us that it is just unnecessary to give it a second thought”, says Wang. That night, they told their parents that they planned to marry as soon as Qin turned 20. Parents of both sides, however, did not show much surprise.

On Qin’s 20 birthday, Wang threw a surprise birthday party for Qin. When Qin came into their home as usual, she was surprised to find herself surrounded by a group of friends who jumped out and said “happy birthday” to her with a cake. Then, more unexpectedly, Wang took out a ring, bent down on one knee, and proposed to her.

The next day they registered for marriage early in the morning. “The marriage certificate dosen’t make too much difference to our marriage life. Getting a marriage certificate is much easier than to reissue a student’s identity card”, Wang said jokingly.

Qin tells us, “Rather than trust in so-called love, I trust in Wang.” For them, to love is to believe in each other. “Love is more like something out of your imagination, but trusting is more solid and concrete---it’s about the perfect mutual understanding, and about two perfectly matched souls”, says Qin.

Blessed by their families, the new couple plans to hold their wedding when they are not busy. “That will be a unique one”, they tell us.
