Peking University, May 24, 2015: On May 17, the much-anticipated music festival PKU Idol took place in the Khoo Teck Puat Gymnasium, in which 15 students performed for a vast audience as well as a panel of judges that included famous producers and musicians. The champion, after four rounds of harsh competitions, went to freshman Zhang Siyuan from the School of Foreign Languages.
Each of the 15 contestants was full of musical talent, and brought many surprises with their creative works and performances. For most of the audience, every year, this is the show worth hours of standing in line to get one ticket for.
This competition is about singing skills, performing skills, and most importantly, originality. Of the 15 songs from the first round, most are original, and very unique. North of No.2 Gymnasium, South of the market, an original song written by An Tairan from the College of Urban and Environmental Sciences, depicted a typical part of the campus using witty lyrics and a unique style, striking a responsive chord in the hearts of numerous PKUers. The original a capella song, Malagebi, vividly described a natural scene of horses running and neighing in the savannah. Even famous pop songs were reorganized into covers and performed differently from the original, forming sharp impressions in the hearts of the judges and the audience.
The judges were all impressed by the contestants, and commented, “PKU students can not only sing well, but also have various specialties. You guys are humorous and admirable!” The show not only showed us the musical talents and artistic potentials of our students, but also their paths of getting closer to their dreams. As soon as you think that PKU has nothing more than its academic strength, there is always something more to surprise you.
