Peking University, Dec. 4, 2015: From Nov. 14 to 15, the 2015 ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (abbreviated as ACM-ICPC) Asia Beijing Regional Contest was held in Peking University. Selected from 1042 teams competing in online sub-contest this September, 201 representative teams from 136 universities in Asia took part in this regional contest, competing for advance to 2016 World Finals. After 5 hours’ contest, “Dreadnought” team from Shanghai Jiao Tong University won the championship.
On the afternoon of Nov. 14, the opening ceremony of Beijing Regional Contest was inaugurated in Peking University Gymnasium. Professor Wang Jie, vice president of Peking University, delivered a welcome speech. He gave a high appraisal to the significance of ACM-ICPC in renovating the talent cultivation mode as well as improving the quality of education, and introduced the background of the representative team of Peking University.
Wang Jie said, Peking University would supply quality service for teams and coaches, and he further wished all teams luck.
Then professors from ICPC Executive Committee gave their speeches. Professor William Poucher, Executive Chairman of ICPC, affirmed the high-speed development of ACM-ICPC in China and PKU’s contribution. He hoped that all the participating students could seize the opportunity to practice and explore, and grow into experts in the programming project and make greater contribution to the world in the future.
The contest began at 9 am on Nov. 15. After 5 hours’ competition, “Dreadnought” team from Shanghai Jiao Tong University won the championship; “Tear Bear” team from Tsinghua University and “Saga” team from Fudan University won the second and third place. 15 teams received the gold award, 31 teams received the silver and 45 teams received the bronze.
Ni Haobing, member of “Dreadnought,” felt lucky for the victory of his team, for their margin advantage over “Tear Bear” in the contest. As one of the top-level participants in ACM-ICPC, Shanghai Jiao Tong University has achieved outstanding results in previous contests and has won the World Finals for twice. Ni said that the high attention received from the university and training before the contest contributed to their victory this time. With respect to the World Finals next May, he said his team would save no effort be fully prepared.
Wang Jianhao, member of “Tear Bear,” said that it was his first time to join the ACM-ICPC. Although their team regrettably lost the contest by a narrow margin against “Dreadnought” due to the longer time they spent in resolving the tasks, the two teams will compete again in the AsiaX EC-Final Regional Contest in December.
Peking University served as the host of Beijing Regional Contest but didn’t compete in it, for the team of PKU has won the championship in the previous Changchun Regional Contest and therefore has advanced to the World Finals. “We are mainly serving for other teams this time, and the success of the contest owes a lot to the devotion of all the volunteers,” said Luo Guojie, one of the directors of Beijing Regional Contest and coach of PKU team. Peking University is making effort to bid for the 2018 ACM-ICPC World Finals, and this year’s experience as a regional contest host helps PKU build up confidence.
In the closing ceremony, Professor Dong Zhiyong, president of Office of Educational Administration, Peking University, congratulated the teams on their outstanding results in the contest on behalf of the host. At the same time, he highly appreciated the sponsors for their great support. Hu Huasong, senior director of the Babeltime Inc. as well as a PKU alumnus, shared his experience with the teams, appreciating the great motivation and help that ACM-ICPC brought to his growth.
