Peking University, May 3, 2016: On May 3rd, 2016, the opening ceremony of Memorial exhibition of Mr. Shih-Liang Chien and Shu Chien’s speech “My father - his lifelong influence on me” held at PKU. Academician Shu Chien, son of Mr. Shih-Liang Chien and eminent Chinese-American scientist, attended the ceremony with his wife Kuang-Chung Hu and relatives.
Executive Vice President Ke Yang congratulated the opening of the memorial exhibition at PKU in the speech and welcomed the distinguished alumnus Mr. Shu Chien back to the Alma Mater. She reviewed Mr. Shih-Liang Chien’s outstanding contribution to education at mainland and Taiwan as the dean of PKU Department of Chemistry and as the president of Taiwan University in her speech. She further pointed out that Mr. Shih-Liang Chien had fostered students now around the world, and that he is an academic educator connecting Beida and Taiwan University, mainland and Taiwan, and also the witness of the two sides sharing the same root. The exhibition showed his noble character, comprehensive knowledge and profound education concept. She wished thriving education and enhanced exchange among the youth across the strait.
Academician Shu Chien then recounted the preparation of the exhibition, and expressed his gratitude toward Beida, Taiwan University and Taiwan “Academia Sinica” for their generous help.
Academician Shu Chien, Mrs. Kuang-Chung Hu, Ke Yang and Gao Song unveiled the exhibition together.
After the ceremony, Academician Shu Chien gave a speech on “My father- his lifelong influence on me”. In his speech, Mr. Shu Chien recounted the life of Mr. Shih-Liang Chien and his time with his father. He thought that his father’s principle and attitude had a profound influence on his modes of thinking, behavior and academic attitude. The speech won many applauses and gave the audience a deeper understanding on Shih-Liang Chien and scholars like Hu Shih and Fu Sinian.
Background Info：
Shih-Liang Chien, famous chemist and educator, M.Sc and Ph.D.at UIUC. He was the dean of PKU Department of Chemistry, President of Taiwan University and President of Taiwan “Academia Sinica”. Shih-Liang Chien had taught at university for years and promoted the development of higher education system at PKU Department of Chemistry and Taiwan. As the former President of “Academia Sinica”, he promoted the establishment and expansion of many research institutes in emerging areas in Taiwan region and contributed to talent cultivation there.
Shu Chien, eminent Chinese-American scientist, Academician of National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering and the Institute of Medicine, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and Foreign academician of Chinese academy of sciences. He is President of the Whitaker Institute of Biomedical Engineering at the University of California, San Diego. He has made great contribution on Mechanical effects on gene expression and signal transduction, systems physiology，molecule, cell and tissue biological engineering, biochemical property and molecule construction of cell membrane, transportation of macromolecule through blood vessel and other areas. He has published 439 papers on renowned academic publications including Nature and Science and 9 classic books.
