Peking University, Dec. 20, 2016: On Dec 3, the second “Peking University Geography Lecture” was held at Yingjie Overseas Exchange Center. Chairman of College of Uran and Environmental Sciences Council Liu Gengnian hosted the opening ceremony.
PKU Vice President Wang Jie gave an opening speech. He said that Peking University had been concerned about and committed to the development of College of Urban and Environmental Sciences and the geography discipline and wished the Lecture success.

Dean of College of Urban and Environmental Sciences He Canfei introduced the development of the geography discipline in terms of team building, talent cultivation, international exchanges, domestic cooperation, etc. He clarified that the aim of the college is to follow the need of our country, follow the cutting edge of the discipline, continue the good tradition and make major achievements through determined efforts. He also noted that the geography discipline should contribute to the building of Peking University as a worldwide first-class university with Chinese characteristics.

After the opening ceremony, 13 academics from different fields of geography made theme academic reports in turn. The reports, concerned with cutting edge of the discipline, showed high-level research results.

Academician Fu Bojie made an academic report named “The Balance and Integrationof Ecosystem Services.”He introducedhot fieldsin ecosystem services and emphasized the need to balance different services of the ecosystem.
Academician Chen Fahu shared the results of his research “East-West Exchanges and Prehistoric Humans Settling down on Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.” Combining studies in climate circle, human evolution, archaeological discoveries and experimental analysis, he studied when and why humans began settling down on Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
Academician Guo Zhengtang expounded, through a comparative study on atmospheric CH4 signals and monsoon records, on the confirmation of the four major influences that Pleistocene monsoon had on atmospheric CH4.
The report meeting on the afternoon involved 8 professors from College of Urban and Environmental Sciencesintroducing their latest research results.
The second “Peking University Geography Lecture” attracted nearly 400 geography academics and students. Attendees come from nearly 100 universities, research institutes, Departments and secondary schools. For example, Peking University, Wuhan University, Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research of Chinese Academy of Sciences, High School Affliated by Renmin University of China, etc.
The second “Peking University Geography Lecture”, supported by Peking University and based on the results of researches and innovations of College of Urban and Environmental Sciences, communicates academic achievements, spreads academic ideas, shows prospects for future cooperation. It also helps nurture talent and inject vitality to the development of geography.
