First Student Entrepreneurial Teams enter PKU Global Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Peking University, March 18, 2017: In order to cultivate innovative spirit and support students’ business startups, Peking University recently commenced trial operation of the Global Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Up to now, the Center has received applications from 39 student startupteams, ten of whichwill be the first batch to enter the New Youth Maker Space. The projects of the teams involve artificial intelligence, information technology, environmental protection, cultural industries and so forth.

On March 14, Vice Chairman of the CPPCC National Committee and Chairman of the Central Committee of the Jiusan Society Han Qide, accompanied by senior officials from Peking University, visited the Center.
 
Han first went to the Innovation Exhibition and watched “Bloom on the Ink”, exhibition of PKU female calligraphers’ works. He appreciated the works with enthusiasm, gave sincere comments, and spoke highly of PKU’s efforts to enrich the campus culture and stimulate the development of the art of calligraphy.
 
Later, Han visited theNew Youth Makerspace and the “Geek” Laboratory. He held friendly exchanges with the student entrepreneurial teams, and listened attentively to several introductions of their projects.

On the same day, Thailand’s ambassador to China H.E. Mr. Piriya Khempon also paid a visit to the Center. Mr. Piriya Khempon and his delegation learned in detail about the functional zone division of the Center, and had an in-depth discussion with the student teams. Mr. Piriya Khempon then went to the “Geek” Laboratory and watched various creative products produced by college students. He spoke highly of the development of innovation and entrepreneurship at Peking University, and encouraged students from both countries to promote bilateral cooperation and enhance people-to-people communications through entrepreneurial collaboration.

On March 15, the Center held its first Open Day Events. Yan Yan, 1984 alumni of Peking University at Department of Sociology and the chief partner of SAIF Partners, and Steven Hoffman, the founder of Founders Space at Silicon Valley, shared their unique insights of innovation, entrepreneurship, investment and other fields in China and US with the audience.

The innovation and entrepreneurship education has become one of the core contents of college education, and a crucial factor for the universities to cultivatetalentsand make contributions to society. PKU Global Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship serves not only as a platform of learning and practicing for college students, a cradle for future entrepreneurs, but also a stimulus to the optimization of college entrepreneurial climate and the cultivation of innovative spirit.
