Hao Ping visits KIAA and GSM of PKU

Peking University, May. 1, 2017: In the afternoon of April. 27, Hao Ping, chairman of the School Council , visited KIAA (Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics) and GSM (Guanghua School of Management). He was accompanied by Gao Song, vice-president of PKU, and heads of related departments.
At KIAA, Hao met with Wu Xuebing (deputy director of KIAA), Liu Fukun (chair of the Department of Astronomy, School of Physics, PKU), and several students from the institute. He Zishan, director of KIAA, gave a brief introduction of the institute, which included the development, goals, achievements, and other relevant details of KIAA. He also pointed out the challenges and problems that the institute is facing. Later on, Wu Xuebing discussed the institute’s financial situation and the current problems with the management of international faculty members.
In response, representatives from the Office of Disciplinary Development, Office of Financial Affairs, Office of Educational Administration and other relevant offices, had a discussion upon the problems, and pledged to enhance support for the operations of KIAA.
In the end, Hao Ping gave a summary statement. He began by giving credit to the achievements which have been made by KIAA in such a short time. In terms of what is in need of being improved, Hao Ping said that the university would provide more support and help to the institute through perfecting certain policies. He appealed to the faculty members at KIAA to spare no effort to make contributions to the institute, and attempt to make it the best research institute in the world.
Afterwards, a panel discussion was held in the new building of GSM, which aimed at discovering problems and planning new resolutions for GSM. During the discussion, Liu Qiao, dean of GSM, gave a detailed presentation about the academic research, education and teaching management, and social service of GSM. Moreover, he outlined the future goals, recent plans, and existing problems of the school.
Hao Ping then pointed out that GSM had made great achievements and contributions since its establishment, and praised it as a model for disciplinary development. He encouraged GSM to make further explorations and experiment abundant new practices in the aspect of teaching reform and human resources reform, which echo with the directions of national strategic development. He urged for enhanced communications between GSM and other departments of the university in order to create a better environment for students’ learning and teachers’ research.
