Peking University, March 6, 2018: On the 4th of May this year, Peking University will celebrate its 120th anniversary. This website will commence a “100-year school anniversary” theme to report on the school’s important events and initiatives, as well as to highlight the distinctive activities of various school departments. This segment hopes to foster school spirit and establish a better understanding of the progress of Peking University since its reform.
On the evening of March 3, Peking University Student Art Group performed to celebrate the Welcoming Ceremony of the school’s 120th anniversary. This also marks the dance troupe’s 30th annual performance at the auditorium of the Peking University Hall. The dance group consists of nearly a hundred members that include graduated seniors, foreign students, and those with no prior experience. Former PKU President Xu Zhihong, former PKU Executive Vice President Chi Huisheng, PKU Council Vice Chairman Ye Jingyi and other distinguished guests were all in attendance and had applauded the group’s remarkable accomplishments in the past 30 years.
Modern dance “Backbone”
The performances were divided into three chapters that focus on the three dimensions of “achievement”, “reflection”, and “future,” which fully embodies the theme of this year’s anniversary celebration and the unique characteristics of the dance troupe. The combination of both classic and modern creative programs had enthralled the audience. Jin Shanshan, an alumna of the 1991 batch specializing in Indian dance, had been invited as a guest performer. The spectacular portrayals, enthusiastic atmosphere and the commitment and vigor of the dancers, ensured that the performance was a complete success.
The Peking University Dance Company was restored in 1987 and had attracted a large community of passionate and talented members. In 2013, the Student Dance Company joined the newly established Peking University Student Art Group. Through the guidance of the school’s Youth League Committee and the Peking University School of Arts, the group is further strengthening its development of individual character and pursuing more opportunities for foreign exchange. In recent years, the dance troupe has organized campus physical education programs, inviting interested students with zero backgrounds to participate actively. After undergoing rigorous training, the students were able to participate in this year’s performance to showcase the fruits of their labour.
