Hu began the training session with a general account of the anniversary celebration, which will be based on the theme of “Staying true, innovating forward, and leading the future.” He introduced the event schedule, the arrangement of activities, and the official logo. Hu also emphasized the importance of volunteer work, and explained his hopes for professional and detailed work from volunteers. He also shared his own memories and stories about PKU to encourage students to do some volunteer work for our university.
Hu delivering his speech
Three student volunteers shared their own experiences. Tang Qing, an undergraduate student from the School of International Studies, joined the army in his junior year as the only new cadet recruited to the “Leifeng Squad.” In addition to his outstanding performance in the army, he also donated his subsidies to help uneducated children and displayed the spirit of community service as a “successor to Leifeng”. Wang Lin, a doctoral student from the PKU School of Oncology, established a welfare project after being touched by the experiences of sick children in his earlier years. Li Xiaodan, a graduate student from the School of Education, talked about her thoughts on volunteer work from 4 different angles—working with the purest heart, with the greatest persistence, with recipients’ needs as the basis, and with teamwork to realize one’s purpose.
Secretary Chen spoke on a retrospective history of PKU volunteer service, dating its beginnings back to 1993 when students volunteered to remove the accumulated snow. He analyzed the connection between “volunteer” and “duty”, and stressed the voluntary spirit as pertinent to PKU students: for the happiness of people, for the resuscitation of our nation, and for the general human progress, we should remain faithful to our ideals and keep forging ahead.
Chen giving his summary
2018 is the 55th year since Chairman Mao appealed to the public to “Learn from Comrade Lei Feng”, the 25th year since China Youth Volunteer Action was launched, and the 120th year of PKU. Held on the memorial day of two such events, this meeting is as a preamble to the PKU anniversary celebration.
