May 22, 2019
Peking University, May 22, 2019: From May 13 to 16, the 2019 Chinese Language Contest for International Students from the School of Chinese as a Second Language of Peking University was held in B101 lecture hall of Florence Fang Building. International students from more than 50 countries and regions participated in the competition. In each session, 4 international students served as the contest emcees and 4 college teachers along with the class monitors served as judges. Finally, 4 first prizes, 8 second prizes, 9 third prizes were awarded to contestants, along with several best performance awards, best creativity awards, and best play script awards.

The awardees

The contestants were divided into four groups based on their Chinese proficiency. During the competition, they used Chinese to perform sitcoms, musicals, songs, and so on. The various programs not only showed the progress of international students in learning Chinese, but also demonstrated their great individual talents and the achievement of their group cooperation.

In the competition, many students ingeniously adapted classic Chinese fairy tales and traditional stories. For instance, one participating group added martial arts performance into the story of Hua Mulan, which received plenty of positive feedback.

On the other hand, some of the performances vividly displayed the daily life of international students, such as using rap to express the pain and joy of losing weight under the temptation of Chinese delicacies, which had the resonance with many of the audience.

In addition, there were also performances that touched upon cultural differences between countries and the expression of love — not only that within nations, but also the inter-racial love and the love towards the environment, as shown in the sitcom Combine the Ancient and the Modern as a Whole. What's more, Kunqu Opera and face changing performance also amazed the audience.

The face changing performance

The annual Chinese Language Contest for International Students not only showcased the students' learning achievements and talents, but also witnessed the rapid development of the School of Chinese as a Second Language regarding its teaching excellence, which represents PKU’s determination to provide international students with high quality experiences in their learning of Chinese as a second language.
