World-class scientists give lectures on artificial intelligence
Sep 29, 2020
Peking University, September 29, 2020: The first lectures on artificial intelligence in the fall semester was recently hosted by the Institute for Artificial Intelligence (IAI), Peking University. The event was part of the distinguished lecture series of the PKU-AI forum. The lectures were jointly given by two world-class artificial intelligence experts: Michael I. Jordan, professor at the University of California, Berkeley and a member of the American Academy of Engineering, and Harry Shum, director of the academic committee of IAI. The online lectures were broadcast on multiple online platforms, with 203,146 viewers on Kuaishou, 77,558 on Douyin, 111,623 on Baidu and 7,800 on bilibili.

Professor Michael I. Jordan gave a lecture entitled "Towards a Blend of Machine Learning and Microeconomics" in which he gave an overview of the development history of machine learning and analyzed the challenges faced by machine learning. He pointed out that in today’s world, machine learning should go beyond pattern recognition and it should function more as a tool to assist interactive decision-making.

Subsequently, Professor Harry Shum gave a lecture entitled "A Gentle Introduction to AI Creation” in which he shared his thoughts on what the future holds for artificial intelligence, and put forward the novel concept of "AI Beings". He analyzed the relationship between artificial intelligence and its human creators using examples such as Microsoft’s artificial intelligence robot Xiao Bing, a humanoid who can sing, paint, and even create poetry and music. Due to the rapid development of AI creations in recent years, Professor Shum pointed out that the best way to foresee the future is to create the future. The development of technologies like artificial intelligence and quantum computing shoulders the responsibility of creating a better future for mankind and promoting historical progress.
