Peking University, Apr. 24, 2011: The 8th PKU CCISSR Forum (2011) was held at Peking University on April 19th, 2011. This forum is co-hosted by the School of Economics and China Center for Insurance and Social Security Research (CCISSR). The theme of the 8th forum is “The 12th Five-Year Plan and new challenges: general economic and social risk management”.

The year 2011 is the opening year of China’s 12th Five-Year Plan. The 12th Five-Year Plan period is a critical period to lay the foundation of completing building a “well-off society”. At this stage, China’s economic and social development will face many challenges, which is the reason for an all-round reform in every field.

During the first session of the forum,  Wu Dingfu, president of the ChinaInsurance Regulatory Commission, delivered his keynote speech titled “New Opportunities and Challenges for the Insurance Industry during the Twelfth Five Year period: General Management of Economic and Social Risks”. And  Hu Xiaoyi, vice minister of the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security gave the other keynote speech titled “Construction of China’s Social Security System’s Challenges and Their Solutions in the Twelfth Five Year Period”.

In the second session,  Luo Zhongmin, president of The Insurance Institution of China, Zhang Weigong, president and director-general of Sunshine Insurance Group Corporation Limited, Li Yuquan, director-general of the PICC Health Insurance Company Limited, and Professor Sun Qixiang, Dean of PKU School of Economics and director-general of CCISSR delivered their speech separately on general risk management from different perspectives such as earthquake insurance, social responsibility of the insurance industry, health insurance and general risk management as a new issue during the 12th Five Year period. The speakers’ investigations into the risks and risk management during the twelfth five year were well received by the participants of this forum.

In the afternoon, the PKU CCISSR Forum academic seminar was held. The authors of 30 chosen papers from institutes of higher education, scientific institutes and the industry field presented their papers during the 6 sessions of the seminar, and discussed with all the seminar participants. The 6 sessions’ topics are: insurance market, risk management of insurance companies, innovation and its application in insurance, agriculture-related insurance, social insurance and insurance supervision. The forum altogether received 170 papers and finally 30 of them were selected through an anonymous appraisal of a specialist committee. The selected papers will be included in China Proceedings of Conference Full-text Database (CPCD). At the closing ceremony, Professor Sun announced the result of the selection and presented   awards to the winners.

Representatives from CCISSR, specialists in insurance and social security, government officials, elites in related fields, teachers and students from PKU and journalists from China Securities Journal, Financial Times, China Insurance News and Hexun.com, altogether about 200 people attended this forum.

The annual PKU CCISSR forum is an important academic activity in the insurance and social security field at home, and has been successfully held eight times up till now. Since the establishment of CCISSR in 2003, it has made great contributions to the development of China’s insurance industry and social security system with its aim of building a bridge of communication among the political, industrial and academic fields, and fostering theoretical research as well as knowledge innovation through a series of academic activities.

A Brief Introduction to CCISSR

PKU CCISSR was founded in September, 2003. It is an academic institute dedicated to insurance and social security research. Professor Sun Qixiang of School of Economics heads the center.

CCISSR has been sticking to the PKU motto of “Patriotism, Advancement, Democracy and Science”. Since the establishment of CCISSR, it has made great contributions to the development of China’s insurance industry and social security system with its aim of building a bridge of communication among the political, industrial and academic fields, and fostering theoretical research as well as knowledge innovation through a series of academic activities.

The annual PKU CCISSR Forum, China Insurance News’s weekly “PKU Insurance Review” column, the PKU CCISSR Seminar held every other week and many other publications have all become prestigious academic icons of the insurance and social security field. In both 2006 and 2009, CCISSR won the title of “PKU Outstanding Humanities and Social Sciences Research Institutions” in the competition with the other 200 institutions at PKU.
