Peking University alumni elected AGU Fellows, AMS Fellows and awarded Mid-Career Award

Peking University, November 26, 2020: Alumni of the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences in the School of Physics at Peking University were recently recognized for their scientific accomplishments.

Zhang Chidong was elected as Fellows of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) for 2020. Zhang was previously a faculty member at the University of Miami and is currently working at the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL) of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). He graduated from Peking University with a bachelor’s degree in meteorology.

Fu Rong was also elected as AGU Fellows of for 2020. Fu received her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in meteorology from Peking University in 1984 and 1987 respectively. She is currently teaching at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Since 1962, AGU has elected fewer than 0.1% of members to join this prestigious group of individuals. Given their extraordinary contributions to their disciplines, Zhang and Fu were elected members of this year’s AGU Fellows.

Liao Hong, who earned her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from PKU School of Physics in 1986 and 1989 respectively, has been awarded AGU’s Piers J. Sellers Global Environmental Change Mid-Career Award. Liao is one of the 85 distinguished scientists who received accolades from AGU this year.

Moreover, Wang Junhong was elected as Fellow of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) for 2020. She received her bachelor’s degree in atmospheric physics from PKU School of Physics in 1987.

Both AGU and AMS are the most influential international societies and authoritative academic organizations in the field of atmospheric and oceanic sciences. AGU Fellows, AMS Fellows, and AGU Awards are recognition of distinguished academic achievements in the related disciplines.
