Zhu ’83, who was deputy Party secretary of east China’s Jiangsu Province, is a seasoned PKUer that has witnessed, and been involved in, the university’s spring and wintry days.

A native of northeast China’s Liaoning Province born in 1953, he had spent 17 years at PKU.

He entered the PKU Department of Philosophy in 1979, having worked at a local school and then a factory in Heilongjiang Province during the “cultural revolution” (1966-76) - a period before China resumed its college entrance exam system in 1978.

Zhu obtained his BA in 1983 with a 1-year experience as president of the university’s student government and vice chairman of the All-China Students Federation. He worked at the university’s Party Committee organs or Youth League Committee throughout the 1980s and early 1990s.

From February 1988 to December 1989, he served as director of the Office of Student Affairs, Peking University Party Committee.

He worked at the Publicity Department from 1991 to 1992.

Zhu served as vice Party secretary and vice chairman of the university council from 1993 to 1996, before he renewed his career at Party committees of Haidian District, Beijing Municipality, and Jiangsu Province.

In March 2011, he was appointed Jiangsu’s deputy Party secretary, ending his 3-year-term as chief of Nanjing, the provincial capital.

He was devoted to the city’s bid to host the 2014 Youth Olympic Games — “I was so excited that I jumped when I heard from Jacques Rogge: ‘Nanjing (wins)…’” said Zhu during a 2010 interview.

"I had been mentally prepared for quite a different result, because I knew all along how hard and fierce it was to compete with Poznan (the major competitor)," Zhu told Xinhua.

Zhu served as presiding chairman of the Nanjing Youth Olympic Games Organizing Committee; His career path has been closely linked to education and young people: From 2002 to 2008, he was secretary of the Work Committee of Education, Beijing Municipal Party Committee, which oversees the educational affairs of the country’s cultural, educational center.

Party secretary, the top leader de jure at Chinese universities, is usually rendered as “chair of university council” in external exchanges/international communications.

The "council," a nominal unit, also resolves the problem when former university heads need to be styled while attending official events. For example, former President Xu Zhihong is vice chairman of Peking University Council.

Earlier in May, Zhang Yan ’92, who also graduated from the Department of Philosophy, was appointed executive vice Party secretary - or executive vice chairman of Peking University Council. Executive Vice Chairman and Vice President Zhang has been an experienced administrator in Party, Youth League, and student affairs as well.

Zhu’s former post was assumed by Shi Taifeng Master of Law ’85, according to Xinhua Daily, the provincial Party committee’s mouthpiece.
