Over the years, the Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies (KFAS) has been committed to promote the development of education and academic research. In 2000, KFAS has set up the International Scholar Exchange Fellowship (ISEF) Program to invite distinguished scholars from other countries of Asia to Korea to conduct research in collaboration with professors and researchers at leading universities and research institutions in Korea. This program aims to enhance mutual understanding, collaboration and academic development among Asian nations and to further stimulate international scholastic exchange. So far, KFAS has supported approximately 525 distinguished scholars from China, Mongolia, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Philippines, India, Indonesia, Malaysia and other countries in the Asian region. Recently, KFAS has set up 17 Asia Research Institutes and Asia Research Centers in Asian areas, and has supported many high-level international academic conferences such as Beijing Forum and Shanghai Forum, which has made great contributions to the development of social sciences in China and other Asian areas.

PKU and KFAS have been in sound cooperation for a long time. Under the support of KFAS, PKU founded Asia-Pacific Research Institute at 2002. Annually, they has held different kinds of international and domestic academic conferences on the Asia-Pacific research, and supported scholars to publish their research achievements, which has greatly promoted the development of PKU Asia-Pacific studies.

In 2004, PKU, KFAS, and Beijing Municipal Commission of Education co-sponsored the Beijing Forum with “The Harmony of Civilizations and Prosperity for All” as its general theme in order to promote the study of humanities and social sciences around the world, and promote academic development and social progress across the world. After six-year development, Beijing has already become a truly top international academic forum.
