Peking University, Dec .13,2011: Chinese Academy of Science(CAS) announced that it has elected 51 new academicians on December 9 while Chinese Academy of Engineering(CAE) also released its 54 member list of co-opted academicians. Compared with other universities and colleges of the nation, Peking University (PKU) rise to the top by having 6 professors elected as academicians including 5 CAS academicians and 1 CAE academician, which is also the biggist number in the past 10 years.

CAS and CAE are the national academies respectively for the natural science and engineering. “Academician” is the highest academic title conferred on national scientists and experts working in scientific and technological fields in China. The title of academician is a lifelong honor. Nine foreign scientists, including three Nobel Laureates, were elected CAS foreign academicians this year.

 

According to the official academician list of CAE and CAS, 6 professors are from Peking University. Prof. Gao Wen from School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science was elected as CAE academician of Information and Electronic Engineering section. Prof. E Weinan from School of Mathematical Science was elected as CAS academician of Mathematics and Physics section. Prof Liu Zhongfan and Prof. Yan Chunhua from College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering were also honored as CAS academicians of Chemistry section. Prof. Mei Hong, the president of the school of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, was elected CAS academician of Information and Electronic Engineering section.

Thus so far, PKU has up to 86 academicians including 62 CAS academicians, 8 CAE academicians and 16 academicians of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World.
