Peking University, Feb.26, 2012: Autobiography of Gu Jiegang, the only one and most complete autobiography of Gu Jiegang so far, was published recently by Peking University (PKU) Press.
Gu Jiegang, the founder of “Gushi Bian” school, is a legend of the 20th century and the last master of contemporary China. Gu has been viewed as some of an enigma by many scholars. His work has been characterized as scientific and anti-traditional, while at the same time showing pride in Chinese culture and believing that the Chinese identity would withstand modernization.
Almost half of the book content was unveiled for the first time, supported by a lot of drawings that few people knew about before. In this autobiography, Gu pours out his rough experience in his lifetime and talks about tales of success in Chinese academic circle. This autobiography is full of dense feelings and profound meanings. The people he associated with, including Cai Yuanpei, Lu Xun, Hu Shi, Liu Bannong and so on, are also shining for their rational spirit in this book. The autobiography centers on the significant events he experienced in his life and reflected Gu’s entire life. It is a vivid history of academic ideology and culture of the 20th century.
Although this academic leader — Gu Jiegang — has fad out of the public vision in recent years, his achievements and spirit still have a strong impact and appeal to the society. The value of Autobiography of Gu Jiegang lies not only in its epitome of that period, but also a better understanding of this academic leader in modern China.
