Peking University. Beijing. Oct 12, 2009: The 1st Forum of Muslim Population and Development was opened in Yinchuan, capital of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region on Sep 28, 2009. Out of the 91 academic theses received by the forum, the thesis submitted by the research team headed by Zheng Xiaoying, a professor at the Institute of Population Research, PKU, was awarded the first prize.
The Forum was the first one centering on the topic of “Muslim population and development” in the field of population research in China, and regarded as a milestone in the country’s theoretical development of minorities and Muslim population. It showed the achievements made in the studies of minorities in China and invited discussions on the trend, pattern and characteristics of Muslim population development.
Supported by the State National Population and Family Planning Commission and State Ethnic Affairs Commission, the forum attracted more than 80 experts and scholars in the field of population research, including Muslim representatives and representatives from Peking University, China Renmin University, Central University for Nationalities, and research institutions in Ningxia.
