Peking University. Beijing. Dec 7: on Dec 4th, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) announced 35 new academicians for the year 2009, among whom, Prof. Shang Yongfeng from PKU’s Center of Medical Sciences, was elected as the academician of the division of life science and medical sciences, and Prof. Tao Shu from the College of Urban and Environmental Sciences the division of earth sciences.
The 35 academicians, including five female scientists whom were elected from 296 candidates, included six from the mathematics and physics division, eight from the chemistry division, five from the life sciences and medical sciences division, five from the earth sciences division, four from the information technological sciences division and seven from the technological sciences division.
It’s reported that the average age of the new academicians is 54.1, with the oldest 73 and the youngest 42 and 27 of whom are under the age of 60. In addition, six foreign scientists were also elected as CAS academicians this year.
