Peking University, Apr. 23, 2011: The unveiling ceremony for the Peking University (PKU) - Tsinghua University (THU) Joint Center for Life Sciences was held on April 18.
The center aims to promote the research strength and talent training for life sciences at PKU and THU. It also will explore ways to reform on the management system in scientific research, the talents training pattern, and the organization structure at universities, and gain replicable experience in system and mechanism.
Du Zhanyuan, vice minister of the Ministry of Education, Professor Zhou Qifeng, President of PKU, and Professor Gu Binglin, president of THU, gave speeches respectively and unveiled the center.

During the ceremony, Wang Yanjue, director-general of the Department of Science and Technology of the Ministry of Education, read out the Announcement of the Ministry of Education’s Approval of Establishing PKU-THU Joint Center for Life Sciences. With the care and guidance of the country, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Ministry of Finance have jointly established this center, which is a pilot project of reform and innovation in science and education. It is another reform pilot following pilot projects like the Institute of Neuroscience in Shanghai since 1999 by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the National Institute of Biological Sciences since 2004 by the Ministry of Science and Technology and Beijing Municipal Government.
The launching ceremony coincides with the centenary celebration of Tsinghua University, one of China's prime institutions of higher learning.
