Deng Xiaonan, director of Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences at Peking University, pointed out that the exhibition was of great influence in showcasing PKU scholars’ pursuit of exploring truth and demonstrating the historic May Fourth Movement spirit, i.e. patriotism, progress, democracy and science. Deng also extended her appreciation to relevant departments for their assistance with co-organizing this exhibition.

Huang Qiaosheng, executive deputy director of Beijing Luxun Museum, acknowledged that Peking University played an important role in the May Fourth Movement and wished the success of the exhibition.

Sun Qingwei, dean of School of Archaeology and Museology at Peking University argued that the May Fourth Movement spirit lay on the all-round reflection and historical analysis of ancient history, which led to the birth of Chinese archaeology. He also stated that the combination of patriotism and enthusiasm for studying archaeology could carry forward the May Fourth Movement spirit and empower our country.

Zheng Xin, student representative of Department of History at Peking University, mentioned that the May Fourth Movement witnessed the rise of young people’s creativity. As such, Zheng believes that the young generation is endowed with a mission to pass on the May Fourth Movement spirit.

As one of the events commemorating the centenary of the May Fourth Movement, the exhibition “At the Dawn of New Culture: Peking University scholars during the May Fourth Period”, which will last about five months from April 26 to September 20, includes three sections: “The collision of culture”, “The shift of the atmosphere” and “The echo of the spirit”.
