Peking University student Song Xi named “Chinese College Student of the Year”

Peking University, May 14, 2019: The list of 10 awardees who were honored "Chinese College Student of the Year" recently released. All the selected figures demonstrate qualities of an outstanding student in the modern era, particularly the spirit of self-improvement and dedication. Song Xi, a postgraduate of clinical psychology at the School of Psychological and Cognitive Sciences, Peking University, was on the list.

Song is currently the deputy secretary of the Communist Youth League Committee at the School of Psychological and Cognitive Sciences of Peking University and Party publicity branch member. She once served in the People’s Liberation Army Navy Marine Corps from 2016 to 2017 and joined the 25th batch of Chinese Navy Convoy as the only female soldier to escort ships in the Gulf of Aden and Somali waters. The 25th convoy completed 62 escort missions and rescued two ships. In April 2017, the convoy successfully rescued foreign merchant ships hijacked by pirates and arrested those pirates for the first time.

In addition to routine military training, Song also visited Madagascar, Australia, New Zealand and other countries for different activities, such as the Naval Open Day guidance, cultural exchanges with foreign countries, deck reception activities and so on.

After returning to PKU from the navy, Song passionately shared the inspirational stories of the navy on the mainstream media and played an important role in guiding the contemporary youth. Song was once received encouragement from Chinese President Xi Jinping, and received honors like “The Most Beautiful Retired Soldier”, “National March 8 Red-flag Bearer”, the “Times Model and Beijing Example”.

The “Chinese College Student of the Year” is an activity guided by the Ministry of Education and People's Daily, and co-sponsored by People's Daily Online and other media outlets. Since 2006, the activity has been launched annually for all registered Chinese students studying in colleges and universities nationwide.
