PKU alumna wins the 2019 Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin Doctoral Dissertation Award in Astrophysics

Peking University, May 10, 2019: Xu Siyao, an alumna of the Department of Astronomy, School of Physics, Peking University, obtained the 2019 Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin Doctoral Dissertation Award in Astrophysics.

The award was established in 2013 by the Division of Astrophysics (DAP). In 2018 it was renamed for Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin, and generously endowed by the Heising-Simons Foundation. The award recognizes doctoral theses that focus on astrophsics and encourage effective written and oral presentation of research results.
Xu Siyao was a doctoral student from the Department of Astronomy, School of Physics, Peking University. Under the supervision of Professor Zhang Bing, Xu acquired a Ph.D. degree after completing her research on MHD (magnetohydrodynamic) turbulence in astronomical environments in 2017. As one of the three nominees, Xu was invited to present her work at the APS conference in April, 2019 and was selected as the recipient of the award. Other than the 2019 Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin Doctoral Dissertation Award in Astrophysics, Xu has also received the 2017 Hubble Fellowships for Postdoctoral Scientists as well as the 2017 IAU (International Astronomical Union) Ph.D. Prize.
