Peking University, Oct. 26, 2010: David Chan, a Hong Kong tycoon, will donate 6 million yuan into the matching funds of Peking University to support its educational development.
The announcement came at the 5th Meeting of the 4th Peking University Education Foundation (PKUEF) Council, which was held in PKU Administrative Building on Oct. 20.
Chan, honorary trustee of PKU and member of the board of supervisors of the foundation, set forth the decision together with Mrs. Chan, honorary member of the board of trustees of PKUEF.
To encourage money-raising for its schools and departments, Peking University took initiatives to launch the program of matching funds in March 2009. Adding up to a total of 60 million yuan, this act will be implemented within three years, offering donors and potential donors the incentive of doubling the impact of their contributions. Every March and September is the time for application and each matching amount is 10 million yuan. This conference is the third time to successfully take on the act.
With the progress of fund-raising, the program has gained great support from all schools and departments, and 51 projects from 18 departments are qualified, with a total of nearly 16 million yuan, exceeding the limit of one single matching. Mr. and Mrs. Chan said at the meeting that they are willing to donate 6 million yuan for the matching funds in order to complete the amount in support of financing the schools and departments.
As chairman of DKKC Investments limited, Chan is a renowned entrepreneur and real estate tycoon. As good friends of Peking University for many years, the couple first launched Mingde Scholarship in 1996 to give yearly financial award to those top students from provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions, and winners from international competitions, as well as student leaders with global perspectives. The scholarship, with an expanding scale, is also one of the earliest of this kind. Chan’s generous contribution and strong support has greatly helped the construction and whole development of Peking University.
Also, the past decade has witnessed Chan's tremendous contribution for Peking University. In order to expand the influence of PKU in Hong Kong, Chan established the Friends of Beida (Hong Kong) Ltd in 1998. Sponsored by this institution, eight salons on politics, economy, and culture have been held in Hong Kong since 2005.
Besides, Chan is very active in encouraging friends from various circles to help gathering support for Peking University. Generous donation this time has showed again the profound affection Mr. and Mrs. Chan have devoted to this university. Meanwhile, as a symbol of cooperation, this act is going to effectively promote the work of fund-raising in the university.
