Peking University, May 15, 2019: On the morning of May 14, School of Marxism of Peking University and Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung Beijing Office co-hosted in Starlight Hall, Yingjie Overseas Exchange Center, the International Roundtable Forum: Eco-civilization Construction in China and the Future of Socialism. Professor David Kotz from the University of Massachusetts, Professor Claus Thomasberger from University of Applied Sciences, Berlin, Professor Chen Xueming from Fudan University, Professor Huan Qingzhi and Professor Yu Wenli from Peking University successively gave speeches during the forum, which was presided over by Professor Wang Zaiquan, deputy dean of PKU School of Marxism .
In this forum, Professor Chen Xueming proposed that by virtue of great concerns from Chinese leaders, the development of ecological civilization and relative theories in China kept a rather quick pace. Professor Huan Qingzhi also indicated in his following speech that the construction of eco-socialism in modern China should be carried out under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, which has been playing the vital role during the process of eco-construction for a long time.
During the forum
Then, Professor Claus Thomasberger talked about the practical obstacles on the way of achieving ecological goals in Europe and America. According to him, despite some governments and executive parties willing to conduct green politics, the capital societies simply cannot stop chasing after profits at the cost of environment, thus yielding terrible consequences against the good intention. In contrast, Thomasberger believed that Chinese government, as being led by communism, could control the situation much better, thus making the construction of eco-civilization in China possible.
With the forum coming to the end, Professor Yu Wenli concluded that the construction of ecological civilization is still in its initial stage across the world. As a result, China should shoulder the responsibility to explore further into this field with other countries, endeavoring to promote more sustainable development and ecological governance in the future.
