Peking University alumnus Zhang Long obtains multiple international vocal music awards

Peking University, May 23, 2019: From May 5 to May 11, Zhang Long, graduate of 2018 at PKU Academy of Opera, won six awards in total in the 10th International Stanisław Moniuszko Vocal Competition, including: the third prize in the above-mentioned competition; the Maria Fołtyn Award, which praises the best singer of Moniuszko’s works; Polish Radio Award, of which the winner is accredited to record songs with Polish National Radio Orchestra; Piotr Baczała Award, whose winner is selected by this world famous Polish tenor and thus has the honor to share the stage with him; Sinfonia Varsovia Orchestra Award, which offers the winner a chance to perform with Sinfonia Varsovia; and Moniuszko Academy of Music Award, which recognizes the best performer of Moniuszko’s works.

The International Stanisław Moniuszko Vocal Competition in 2019 is significant because May 5 of this year marked the 200th birthday of Stanisław Moniuszko, who is the father of Polish national music. To commemorate him, the competition kicked off on this special day with a grand celebration and a concert.
This year, the number of participants has reached an all-time high. Only 14 of the 378 contestants from 52 different countries reached the final, in which Zhang Long stood out wining six awards and was highly praised by Piotr Baczała, one of the world’s most popular tenors.
After the competition, Zhang will be invited to a vocal concert of Piotr Baczała with Sinfonia Varsovia and Polish National Radio Orchestra. Besides, he has also been invited by Ms. Evamaria Wieser, artistic director of the Salzburg Festival, to perform in “Simon Boccanegra” this summer. This will be Zhang’s debut at world-class opera festivals.
Zhang Long has won many awards in international vocal music competitions in recent years. In 2016, Zhang hit the first place in the 4th Le Grand Prix del Opera. In 2017, he was nominated as the top 10 World Young Singers with the Opera Awards. In the same year, he won the first prize in the 55th Concorso Internazionale Voci Verdiane Città di Busseto (China) and won the Giovani Voci Verdiane in the final competition in Italy.
