Peking University, Nov. 2, 2010: Recently, the blood banks in some areas including Beijing are facing a decrease in stock. To tackle the problem of "Blood Shortage" and meet the urgent medical need, Peking University(PKU) held a blood donation beside Student Dormitory Buiding No. 32 in response to a summon of the Beijing Blood Donation Office.
It was 10:00 in the morning and the donation had just begun, the donation bus was full of students and a long line was queued up before the bus. A doctoral student said, "I came here after hearing about the urgent need for blood in Beijing .Moreover, donating blood is beneficial to your own health while helping others." A freshman from School of Foreign Languages took out his donation card but was refused, for nobody is allowed to donate blood again within six months from his last donation time. She left with great pity. When asked whether she would come next time, she joked. "Of course I will. I should donate more as I'm tall. "
Wang Miao, person in charge of the donation said that the activity was held at least twice per semester, but this time was especially urgent since the lasting "Blood Shortage" had worsened the severe situation of the blood stock in hospitals and even caused postponement of surgeries. So she appealed to everybody on campus to take action and show love for those in need.
Wu Kun, the community doctor said that donating moderate amount of blood would help speed up metabolism as well as strengthen immunity and resistance to diseases. As for blood donation on the bus, many people worry about the sanitary conditions and the risk of catching other infectious diseases which stands as one of the most important reasons behind the "Blood Shortage." "The collecting bags, reagents, syringes and different sorts of disinfection products are all disposable supplies. They will be recycled into medical bags and burned altogether according to national regulations. So there is no potential danger and you won't catch any other diseases, just feel ease to donate blood," Wu said.
