Peking University welcomes new undergraduates

Peking University, Aug. 18, 2019: On August 17, Peking University welcomed more than 3,800 new undergraduate students, including over 400 international students from more than 40 countries and regions and 83 students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Among them, five students are only at the age of 15, and six students celebrated their 18th birthday on their first day at Peking University. Moreover, the registration day also witnessed newcomers from 29 ethnic groups.

Peking University Council Chair Qiu Shuiping and President Hao Ping were on the scene, expressing their warm welcome to the new batch of undergraduates and their sincere greetings to the staff and student volunteers. They also visited the “Green Channel”, where students with financial burdens can apply for a student loan and relevant subsidy.

“Peking University is very appealing to me,” a new freshman told Beida News, adding that she is particularly fascinated by PKU’s profound culture, liberal education, advantages in basic sciences and the cultivation of interdisciplinary talents.

Meanwhile, top students who stood out in international contests were also admitted. They included three of the six Chinese gold medalists of the 60th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), four of the five Chinese gold medalists of the 50th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO), and three Chinese medalists of the 51st International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO).
