Peking University, Sept. 21, 2019: On September 20 , 2019, Norwegian University of Life Science (NMBU) granted an honorary doctorate to Professor Kongjian Yu, for his breakthrough in sustainable landscape design and contribution to harmony between nature and humanity.
As the first recipient for the honorary doctorate on landscape architecture in NMBU, Yu is nominated by NMBU's Department of Landscape Architecture as part of the 100th anniversary of this academic discipline. As the founder of degree education in modern landscape design, NMBU not only leads professional development of landscape design in Norway, but also the landscape design education in Europe.

Kongjian Yu pointed out the direction for this discipline and gained worldwide recognition. His vision for building a sustainable environment is what we aim for. Professor Kongjian Yu is a celebrated world leader in ecological planning and design. He is the founder and dean of the College of Architecture and Landscape at Peking University. Based on the grim problems concerning China’s urban and rural construction, such as national space planning, ecological protection and restoration, Professor Yu initiated the research on ecological security pattern and proposed the ecological priority on a large scale. His academic research influences many national policies and regulations in China and won a wide international recognition, especially represented by the concept of Sponge City, which aims to tackle surface-water flooding and related water management issues in urban areas.
