Peking University, Sept. 23, 2019: In the September of 2019, Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences (IHSS) of Peking University (PKU) held a variety of activities including academic reports, scholars’ speeches and interdisciplinary dialogues in celebration of the third anniversary of its foundation. Academic members, working members, and visiting scholars of IHSS as well as other PKU officials took part in those events.
On the afternoon of September 20th, Zhou Qiren, professor at National School of Development, PKU and Christophe Prochasson, dean of the School of Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences in France respectively delivered two academic reports at the underground lecture hall of No.2 Gymnasium. The reports were hosted by Yu Keping, professor at School of Government, PKU and academic member of IHSS.
The report given by Zhou is titled “Globalization: National Standard and Market Standard”. He pointed out that though globalization at national level suffered major setbacks, fundamental forces such as comparative advantages and exchanges between people were the source of certainty and hope of the future.
Prochasson gave a report on “Saint-Simon and the Change of Western Thoughts”. He argued that Saint-Simon’s thoughts melded scientific view, progressive view and moral outlook, which depicted the prospect of socialism.

On the evening of September 20th, a forum on “Inheritance: Our Academic Relation with PKU” was held at Center for Global College Students Innovation and Entrepreneurship of Teaching Building No. 2. Five senior and respectable professors in the fields of humanities and social sciences were invited to share their journey of college life around period of advanced reforms by talks and prerecorded videos. Han Qide, vice chairman of the 12th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference also gave a speech. The forum was hosted by Yang Hongbo, vice dean of IHSS. Deng Xiaonan, dean of IHSS, Qu Jingdong, executive vice dean of IHSS, and over 200 students and teachers were present.
On the morning of September 21st, three other important interdisciplinary dialogues were held at Jingyuan Courtyard No. 2 and the underground lecture hall of No.2 Gymnasium. The forum on “Intellectual History and History of Art” was hosted by Professor Xue Longchun from School of Art and Archaeology, Zhejiang University while the forum on “Literature and Law” was hosted by Professor Zhang Hui from Department of Chinese Language and Literature, PKU. In the forum on “Science of Archaeology and Anthropology”, scholars discussed the importance of studying and tracing the origin of the discipline.

IHSS, with its root in PKU’s rich soil of academic culture and traditions, has organized over 500 interdisciplinary activities in three years and will forge ahead with dedication and ceaseless passion.
