Peking University, Oct. 7, 2019: Between September 27 and 28, PKU-THU Center for Life Sciences held International Assessment Conference at Peking University. The International Scientific Advisory Committee was invited to conduct a comprehensive and meticulous evaluation of the pilot projects on reform in scientific research and talent cultivation since the establishment of the Center.
The Committee was composed of 13 top experts in the field of life sciences globally. In the assessment, the Committee listened to the work reports from the Director of the Center, the researchers from the Center, and the committees of undergraduates, postgraduates, and post-doctors respectively. The experts of the Committee appreciated their original leading work and had a panel discussion with them to exchanges views on the development of the Center.
In the afternoon of September 28, PKU President Hao Ping, Vice President Gong Qihuang, Tsinghua University Executive Vice President Wang Xiqin, and others joined the assessment conference to receive feedback and suggestions on the part of the Committee.
On behalf of Peking University, Hao Ping expressed sincere welcome and gratitude to the Committee. Hao Ping hoped that with its help and the cooperation of the top two universities in China, the Center of Life Sciences could bring the fruits of scientific research to the whole humanity. Peking University would fully support the development of the Center in terms of resource allocation.
The committee members unanimously accredited the reform as a great success, suggesting that the state and the universities support the life center on a larger scale. They spoke highly of the funding model of “supporting people rather than projects” created by the Center, its training model of “combining research and education,” and other remarkable achievements. The Committee said that the Center had fulfilled its mission as a pilot of scientific research and talent cultivation reforms. They said that they also learned a lot by listening to the reports of the researchers. They recommended that the Center continue to hold an international strategic vision in the future, attract talents from all over the world in an open manner, and build a world-class research and education center.
By virtue of the professional views of the Committee, the international assessment conference not only reviewed the reform work of the Center in the past nine years, but also offered insights for its future development.
