Peking University, June 2, 2011: The Eighth National Congress of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) concluded on May 30 in Beijing. Professor Han Qide, president of Peking University Health Science Center (PUHSC), renewed his term as CAST president after a round of voting.
During a press conference, Professor Han Qide talked about tasks that scientists and engineers would advance for the CAST’s continuity of prosperity after having affirmed the CAST’s achievements in the previous decades. The CAST’s focus on citizens’ individual happiness was emphasized. He said that the CAST would make effortless support in both technical and mechanical sense to serve “Agriculture, Rural Areas, and Farmers.” Plans for the scientific innovation, introduction of talents, and education for future generations were covered. He expressed that the CAST would supervise more strictly on the academic regulation to promote greater scientific and technological achievements.

Professor Han Qide was born in Cixi, Zhejiang Province. He graduated in 1968 from the Shanghai No. 1 Medical College, specialized in pathophysiology. Between 1979 and 1982, he continued his study at Xi'an Medical College and obtained Master's Degree. He then joined Beijing Medical University in 1982 and had been appointed as vice chief of Cardiovascular Section, deputy chief of Cardiovascular Medicine Institute and chief of Cardiovascular Basic Research Institute and vice director of No. 3 Medical Clinical College and dean of Graduate School. He also undertook research work at Emory University in the US from 1985 to 1987. He was elected member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1997. He served, between 2000 and 2002, as executive vice president of Peking University, dean of the Graduate School, president of the Health Science Center, director of the Biomedical Interdisciplinary Research Center, and director of the Cardiovascular Sciences Institute.
Professor Han Qide is incumbent chairman of Jiu San Society's 11th Central Committee, vice chairman of the 10th NPC Standing Committee, president of Peking University Health Science Center, president of the Western Returned Scholars Association, member of faculty evaluation of the Academic Degree Committee of the State Council, vice chairman of S&T committee under the Ministry of Education, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, president of International Society for Pathophysiology, council member of the International Society for Heart Research and concurrent chairman of its China Branch, member of nomination committee of International Pharmaceutical Federation, council member of International Molecular and Cellular Cardiac Society, and council chairman of the Chinese Association of Pathophysiology.
Professor Han Qide was elected president of the seventh National Committee of the Association for Science and Technology (CAST) at the seventh National Congress of CAST held in May 2006.
