Peking University Professor Song Xi Chen elected Scientific Secretary of the Bernoulli Society
Oct 28, 2019
Peking University, October 27, 2019: Peking University Professor Song Xi Chen from Guanghua School of Management was elected Scientific Secretary of the Bernoulli Society at the 62nd ISI World Statistics Congress held by the International Statistics Institute and lasting from August 18 to 23 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He will coordinate the overall operation of the Bernoulli Society over the next four years.

The Bernoulli Society is named after the Bernoulli family of Basel, Switzerland. The Bernoulli family is notable for having produced eight outstanding academics in mathematics and physics from three successive generations. Among them is Jacob Bernoulli (1654—1705), one of the founders of the calculus of variations and probability theory. The Bernoulli distribution discovered by him becomes the basis of many statistical models. Founded in 1975, the Bernoulli Society has become one of the two major associations of probability and statistics in the world (the other being the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, originating from the United States). It publishes Bernoulli, journal on probability and statistics, and has accumulated more than 1,000 members.

Professor Song Xi Chen, a specially recruited expert of China, is currently the head of the Department of Business Statistics and Econometrics of PKU Guanghua School of Management, and co-director of the Center for Statistical Science, Peking University. He became one of the seven elected members of the statistical chapter of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS Fellow) in November 2018.
