Peking University, June 10, 2011: Peking University team “Polyman” won the first prize in the National Petroleum Engineering Design Contest finals, which was held by the China University of Petroleum (Beijing) on May 29.
The PKU prize-winning team comprised of five students from the College of Engineering: Liu Xuan, Wei Zhijie, Li Xiang, Zhang Yongbin, Wu Tianhao. Another PKU team formed by Liu Guangyu, Chen Zhijie, Wang Qichen, Yu Yuan, Zhang Shengzhong won the Commendable Award. Team instructor Professor Gong Bing from PKU College of Engineering won the Outstanding Instructor Award.

The two-month contest was co-organized by the Chinese National Committee for World Petroleum Congress (WPC), the Chinese Petroleum Society (CPS) and China Petroleum Education Society (CPES), and was executed by China University of Petroleum (Beijing). Contestants were involved in research on many aspects of petroleum engineering, given a set of fundamental data and were asked to come up with part or the whole design of oil reserve, well drilling, oil extraction and on the ground engineering processes.
A total of 16 universities and 421 teams participated in the competition, among which 209 teams submitted their reports. After three rounds of preliminary judging by 92 experts from 15 tertiary schools, one special award, four first prizes, six second prizes, nine third prizes and some other awards were given out. Peking University students stood out from numerous entries and won the praise of the judges.
