Peking University and Columbia University jointly holds the Fourth National Governance Forum

Peking University, Oct. 29, 2019: On October 24, the 4th National Governance Forum "Global Governance: Public Services and Community Optimization" was held at Columbia University, jointly organized by the Institute of State Governance Studies (ISGS) of Peking University and the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) of Columbia University.

The opening ceremony of the forum was presided over by Professor Sun Zhe, co-director of China Initiative at Columbia University. Professor Merit Janow, dean of SIPA, made an opening statement. Professor William B. Eimicke, executive director of the Picker Center for Executive Education, warmly welcomed Chinese scholars. Professor Wang Puqu, dean of ISGS, expressed his heartfelt thanks to Columbia University for its strong support and careful preparation.

The first section of the forum was hosted by Sun Zhe, with the theme of "Governance Innovation of Grassroots Government". Robert William Walsh, professor of international and public affairs at Columbia University, Yan Jirong, vice dean of ISGS, Joe Pfeifer, director for Crisis Leadership at the National Center for Disaster Preparedness, and other scholars shared their successful experiences and innovative initiatives in urban governance and community governance.

The second section of the forum was hosted by Professor Zach Tumin of SIPA, with the theme of "Policy and Case Studies". Zhang Huijuan, visiting scholar at SIPA, Jiang Xiaoping, professor of the School of Public Administration of Sichuan University, Ju Hua, professor at the School of Government of Peking University, and other scholars shared successful practice cases under government policy governance.

The third section of the forum was hosted by Wang Puqu, with the theme of “Citizen Participation, Technological Change and Policy Response “. Yang Lihua, professor at the School of Government of Peking University, Li Feng, lecturer at the Department of Political Science and Law of National Academy of Governance, Joah Sapphire, associate professor at SIPA, and other scholars analyzed the combination of technology and policy from a multi-disciplinary perspective by using citizen participation cases.

Wang Puqu pointed out in the closing speech of the forum that governance modernization and development innovation need to actively promote system construction and innovation, while system modernization and innovation need to vigorously innovate science and technology.

After the forum, Columbia University arranged a field trip for Chinese scholars, so that they could have a deeper understanding of community governance and public services in New York City.

This forum has had a positive impact on promoting and publicizing the modernization of national governance system and governance capacity.
