PKU International Cancer Institute Inauguration Ceremony and Annual Symposium held

Peking University, Oct. 31, 2019: On Oct. 22, 2019, Peking University International Cancer Institute Inauguration Ceremony and Annual Symposium was held in the Overseas Exchange Center of PKU Health Science Center.
In recent years, cancer incidence and mortality rates are increasing, and cancer has become one major cause of death in China, posing great threats to our nation and people. Under the guidance of Healthy China Movemen and Innovation-Driven Development Strategy, Peking University International Cancer Institute (hereafter PKUICI) will work with world-class universities and cultivate talents in all respects to promote intensive and in-depth studies in cancer prevention and treatment.
Lei Chaozi, ministry’s director general for science and technology, Zhang Xuemin, director of the Department of Medical Science of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and Zheng Zhongwei, president of Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CAMS) addressed in the inauguration ceremony. Besides, numerous officials and specialists in this field as well as guests of media and business communities were present in the ceremony. PUHSC Executive Vice President Zhang Ning hosted the ceremony and extended his warm welcome to all.
Zhan Qimin, president of PKUICI, gave an overall introduction of the mission, structure of the institute and appreciated all parties for their kindly help both financially and intellectually.

Lei Chaozi, Zhang Xuemin and Zheng Zhongwei made speeches afterwards and showed their recognition and expectation for PKUICI. They highly praised the research and innovation capacity of PKU in the field of tumor research and clinical diagnosis and treatment of cancer, and expressed their hope that PKUICI could become world-leading in the field of cancer study and contribute its efforts to public health and well-being.
Nuohui Medical kindly donated 20 million RMB to PKU Health Science Center to establish PKUICI. Together with Zhu Yeqing, representative of Nuohui Medical, Zhan Qimin and Li Ning signed the donation agreement.

After the inauguration ceremony was the academic symposium. Zhang Xuemin discussed the history of tumor research in three stages and made predictions on the development of the next stage. Lu Xin introduced the progress of cancer research at Oxford University, particularly in the early cancer screening. During the seminar, many valuable ideas and instructive topics were put on the table and thoroughly discussed by professors and experts.

To serve the country and the people, PKUICI will further promote scientific and technological innovation with a global perspective, and strive to build a talent pool to address the healthy challenges faced by mankind. Hopefully one day it will come among the world top research centers upon cancer treatment.
