PKU signs a strategic cooperation agreement with the Palace Museum and Dunhuang Academy

Peking University, Nov. 6, 2019: On the afternoon of October 20, 2019, Peking University, the Palace Museum, and the Dunhuang Research Academy held a symposium in the Jianfu garden of Palace Museum, in which the three sides signed a strategic cooperation agreement to carry out cultural relics protection and research as well as talent training.
The meeting
At the symposium, PKU Council Chairman Qiu Shuiping pointed out that Peking University, with historically close ties to the Palace Museum and Dunhuang Academy, shared the mission of inheriting and carrying forward the traditional culture of China. He hoped that the three parties would work together, and contribute to strengthening cultural self-confidence, promoting the development of Chinese civilization and realizing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
Wang Xudong, director of the Palace Museum, said that this cooperation would link the management institutions of the two of the most valuable world heritage sites with the best higher education institution in China.
Fan Jinshi, PKU alumna and honorary dean of Dunhuang Research Academy, underlined the lack of professional talents that Dunhuang Academy and the Palace Museum were facing at the moment. She hoped that Peking University, as a major institution in the field of archaeology, could cultivate more excellent professionals in this field. The Dunhuang Academy will also welcome visiting experts and scholars to conduct research in Dunhuang.

After the symposium, Peking University signed a cooperation agreement with the Palace Museum and the Dunhuang Academy. The three sides are committed to promoting the establishment of a system for innovation related to cultural relic science and technology.
Subsequently, Peking University signed a cooperation agreement with the Palace Museum. With the joint research center as a platform, the two sides will cooperate in the development of cultural talents and cultural heritage protection research. Peking University will hire well-known scholars of the Palace Museum, who are experts in the ancient architecture, ancient paintings, ancient ceramics, museums and other fields, as doctoral advisors. Peking University will also employ the strengths of the disciplines of history, art, archaeology and literature, and the strong academic resources of the Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Institute of Chinese Studies, brings together both foreign and domestic experts, and launches a number of major research projects related to the Forbidden City.
