Peking University, Nov. 11, 2011: The summit forum “Opportunities and Challenges of Journalists in the New Media Age”, namely the launching ceremony of the first School of Journalism and Communication Culture Festival, was held on the morning of November 8, in Alibaba Lecture Hall, Guanghua 2nd Building, Peking University.
Wang Hongbo, professor of the School of Journalism and Communication, made an opening speech. He thanked the leaders of the School and honored guests in both professional and academic circles and sent his regards to journalists. Professor Wang explained that launching the first culture festival just before the 12th Journalists’ Day was to commend the outstanding achievements of academies and to present the energy and styles of professors and students.
Ruan Cao, deputy secretary of PKU League Committee, pointed out that with the support of the School leaders League activities had obtained fruitful results. He hoped that young people could carry on the spirits of past and march ahead into the future in the next new 10-year journey. Moreover, he mentioned that he was moved when he heard the discussion about Chef Li in Nongyuan Dining Hall, who passed away recently. He said that with the participation of the School of Journalism and Communication, the campaign for dedicated workers at PKU such as Chef Li would be known by more people.
At the same time, Zhang Tian, student delegate of the School of Journalism and Communication, introduced the schedule of the Culture Festival to all, which would be held for seven months from November 2011 to May 2012. During this period, the school would present the School of Journalism and Communication to the world in forms such as academic discussions, cultural activities on campus and communication in business.
On the site of the event, Xu Hong, vice-president of the School of Journalism and Communication, and Feng Zhiyue, member of the PKU Council, unveiled the logo for the first culture festival. The logo of this culture festival is themed by the beating flame, which stands for the “spark fire”. Inside the flame is written the Chinese character “chuan” (传), which is divided into two parts and shows the spirit of innovation.
After the launching ceremony, “Opportunities and Challenges of the Journalists in the New Media Age” summit forum started officially. The guests in professional and academic circles had a heated discussion on the mission of the journalists, professional master education and so on.
PKU President, Vice-President, more than two hundred teachers and students of the School of Journalism and Communication, guests from People’s Daily, Xinhua News Agency, CCTV attended the opening ceremony and summit forum.
